Out of Kyle, 50 miles in every direction
Where I work
49 towns across nine counties. Every one of them has its own page, because the trees genuinely are different in each.
I'm based in Kyle and work anywhere within about 50 miles — Hays, Travis, Caldwell, Comal, Guadalupe, Bastrop, Williamson, Blanco and Bexar-adjacent towns. Kyle, Buda, San Marcos and Mountain City are usually same or next day. Georgetown, Johnson City and Spring Branch sit at the edge and work better batched with other jobs out that way.
Four different growing situations inside one radius
This is why I don't write the same page for every town. Fifty miles around Kyle crosses genuinely different ground, and the trees, the failure modes and the local rules change with it.
Edwards Plateau
Shallow, stony, alkaline clay over limestone. Live oak, ashe juniper and cedar brakes. Roots go wide instead of deep because there's nowhere deep to go, which is why wind-throw is the failure mode out here.
Blackland Prairie
Deep black clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks hard when it's dry. Post oak, blackjack oak, cedar elm, American and winged elm, sugarberry, green ash and honey mesquite. That soil movement is constantly shearing fine roots, and it's behind more mystery decline than any disease.
Post Oak Savannah
Thin acid sandy loam over a dense mottled claypan. Post oak and blackjack oak dominate because they tolerate it. Water perches after a hard rain and then disappears in a drought, and that cycling is hard on trees.
river bottom
Deep, well-drained alluvial soil along the river. Pecan and bald cypress country, and the trees get big. The usual problem isn't health, it's end-weight on long limbs nobody's reduced in decades.
