Tree service in Lakeway, Texas

Lake Travis shoreline: wind off open water, on thin soil.

Short answer

About 45 minutes from me in Kyle. Lakeway sits on the Edwards Plateau, which is what decides how trees behave here. Trimming and stump grinding start at $250, hazardous limb work at $500, removals quoted per tree, and haul-away is included in all of it.

What I see in Lakeway yards

That combination is why Lakeway loses whole trees rather than limbs. A shallow-rooted live oak on a rock shelf with miles of open water to windward is a different risk from the same tree in Kyle. Thinning the crown so wind moves through it instead of pushing against it is the useful work here.

The trees I get called about in Lakeway

Live oak and ashe juniper on thin soil over rock, with open water to windward. That combination is why Lakeway loses whole trees rather than limbs — there isn't enough root plate to anchor against sustained wind off the lake. Shallow-rooted live oak on a limestone shelf with miles of open water to windward, which is why Lakeway loses whole trees where other towns lose limbs. Thinning a crown so wind moves through it rather than pushing against it is the genuinely useful work here, and it's a different objective from the tidy-up thinning people usually ask for.

How to tell these species apart, and what goes wrong with each one.

The ground underneath: Edwards Plateau

Shallow, stony, alkaline clay over limestone. Live oak, ashe juniper and cedar brakes. Roots go wide instead of deep because there's nowhere deep to go, which is why wind-throw is the failure mode out here.

Permits in Lakeway

I haven't read Lakeway's ordinance closely enough to summarize it here, and I'm not going to guess at a rule that could cost you a mitigation bill. Call the city's planning or development services department and ask two questions: what trunk diameter triggers a permit, and is there a protected species list.

I have verified the rules for Austin, Kyle, Buda and Dripping Springs — those are written up here, along with how to measure your trunk properly, which every one of these ordinances depends on.

Working on a Lakeway property

Hilly, sometimes steep, with some lakeside lots where equipment access is genuinely poor. Forty-five minutes from Kyle, so give me notice unless it's urgent. Hillside lots, long private drives and tight turns, forty-five minutes out. Access is the constraint on nearly every Lakeway job — if the chipper can't get up the drive, everything gets carried, and that's what the price is really measuring.

Questions I get from Lakeway

Should I thin my crown for wind?

On a lakeside lot, often yes — a crown that lets wind move through it takes far less load than one that acts like a sail. That's different from over-thinning, which weakens the tree. It's a judgment call and worth looking at rather than guessing.

Why do whole trees fail here instead of just limbs?

Because the failure is at the roots, not in the wood. A shallow root plate on a rock shelf with miles of open water upwind is a different risk from the same species in a sheltered Kyle back yard.

Does thinning a tree make it safer in wind?

Done properly, yes — the point is to let air pass through the canopy instead of the whole crown acting as a sail. Done badly it's the opposite: strip the interior and leave heavy tufts at the ends of long limbs and you've built a set of levers. That's called lion-tailing and it's one of the more common ways trees get damaged by people who meant well.

Getting me out to Lakeway

Lakeway is about a 45-minute run for me. At that distance it works best batched with other work out that way, so give me a little notice if it isn’t urgent. Call or text me a photo with something in frame for scale and I can usually give you a number without driving out. Estimates are free either way.

One rule that applies everywhere, including here: don't prune oaks between February 1 and June 30. Here's why.
