Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming and pruning in Central Texas

Pruning is the only thing I do that makes a tree measurably better instead of just smaller. It's also the easiest thing in this trade to do badly, and the damage doesn't show up for years.

Short answer

Most residential trims I do start at $250, and haul-away is included. The one hard rule in Central Texas: don't prune oaks between February 1 and June 30 — that's the oak wilt window, and Texas A&M Forest Service is unambiguous about it. Everything else is a judgement call about how much to take and where.

What I'm actually doing up there

Three things, in this order. Deadwood comes out first, because dead limbs are what fall and they're doing nothing for the tree. Then I take weight off the long horizontal limbs — the ones reaching out over your roof or your driveway with nothing supporting the far end. Then clearance: getting the canopy off the house, off the power drop, off the walkway, high enough that you can mow under it.

What I'm not doing is thinning the interior for the sake of it. There's a habit in this business of stripping a canopy out so it looks tidy, and it's genuinely bad for the tree. Leaves are how it feeds itself. Take too many and you get a stress response — a burst of weak, upright water sprouts that you'll be paying somebody to cut off again in three years.

The rough rule I work to is that a healthy mature tree shouldn't lose more than about a quarter of its living canopy in one visit, and usually a lot less than that. If somebody quotes you a heavy thin-out on a mature live oak, ask them why.

Why the season matters more than anything else

If you own an oak — and around here you probably do — the calendar outranks everything. Texas A&M Forest Service says avoid pruning oaks from February 1 through June 30. Sap beetles carrying oak wilt spores are active in that window, and a fresh cut on an oak is precisely the doorway they're looking for. That's how new infection centers start.

So for five months a year, if you call me about an oak and it isn't a hazard, I'm going to tell you to wait and put you on the schedule for July onward. I'd rather book the fall work than take your money now and start a problem in your yard.

The exception is a genuine safety issue — a cracked limb over a bedroom doesn't get to wait until July. In that case it's the fewest cuts possible and every wound gets painted immediately, right then, not at the end of the day.

When you don't need me

A few honest ones, because they come up constantly.

If the tree is young — say under about four inches through the trunk — you can do most of what it needs yourself with a pair of hand pruners and fifteen minutes. Structural pruning on a young tree is the highest-value tree work there is, and it's also the cheapest, because it's you doing it. Pick one central leader, remove the branch that's competing with it, take off anything growing back toward the middle. That's it.

If it's a small amount of deadwood you can reach from the ground with a pole saw, that's a Saturday, not a service call.

And if a live oak dropped a lot of small leaves and twigs in the spring, that's usually just what live oaks do. It isn't a disease and it doesn't need pruning.

Why quotes vary so much

Questions I get asked

How much does tree trimming cost in the Austin area?

My residential trims start at $250 and haul-away is included. What moves the number is size, access, and what's underneath the tree. A 30-foot yard tree with a clear drop zone is straightforward. The same tree over a pool, a fence and a neighbor's greenhouse has to come down piece by piece on ropes, and that takes hours longer.

When should you not prune oak trees in Texas?

February 1 through June 30. Texas A&M Forest Service advises against pruning oaks in that window because sap beetles that spread oak wilt are active and fresh cuts attract them. If a safety hazard forces a cut during those months, make as few cuts as possible and paint every wound immediately.

How much of a tree can be safely pruned at once?

As a working rule, no more than about a quarter of the living canopy of a healthy mature tree in a single visit, and usually well under that. Removing too much live foliage stresses the tree and triggers weak water-sprout regrowth.

How often do trees need trimming?

A mature, established tree in good shape typically needs attention every three to five years. A young tree benefits from a light structural prune more often than that. A tree over a roof or a driveway usually needs clearance work sooner, because it's the structure setting the schedule, not the tree.

Do you clean up afterwards?

Yes, and it's included in the price rather than added at the end. Branches, limbs and debris all go. If you want logs kept back for firewood, tell me before we start and my crew will stack them instead of running them through the chipper.
