What I see in Kyle yards

Kyle sits on the Blackland Prairie, and the black clay under most of this town is what quietly kills trees here. It swells after a rain and shrinks hard in an August drought, and that constant movement tears fine roots. When a mature live oak in a Kyle yard starts thinning from the top down, soil movement and watering are the first two things I want to rule out before anyone says the word disease.

The trees I get called about in Kyle

The Kyle trees I'm called to most are live oak, cedar elm and post oak, plus a lot of Bradford pear and Arizona ash that builders put in during the 2000s boom. Those last two are the ones I end up removing. Bradford pear has a built-in structural flaw — everything comes off the trunk at the same height and the same tight angle, so it splits down the middle in a wind event, usually around year fifteen. Arizona ash grows fast, decays fast, and drops limbs. If you bought a Kyle house built between 1998 and 2010, there is a decent chance one of those two is in your front yard and is now the age where it starts coming apart.

The ground underneath: Blackland Prairie

Deep black clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks hard when it's dry. Post oak, blackjack oak, cedar elm, American and winged elm, sugarberry, green ash and honey mesquite. That soil movement is constantly shearing fine roots, and it's behind more mystery decline than any disease.

Kyle's tree ordinance

Kyle's Chapter 54 calls any tree 25 caliper inches or bigger a "specimen tree." Those are meant to be preserved, and taking one down means asking the Planning and Zoning Commission first. If it comes out, it gets replaced two-to-one, inch for inch.

Most of Kyle is subdivision lots with an alley or a gate wide enough for the chipper, which keeps prices at the low end of my range. The older blocks off Center Street and Burleson are tighter and sometimes mean roping limbs down over a fence instead of dropping them.
