The trees I get called about in Buda
Live oak and cedar elm through the older neighborhoods, post oak on the east side toward the prairie, and bald cypress and sycamore down along Onion Creek. The creek-corridor trees are the ones people misjudge — roots there are shallower and wetter than the same species up on the flat, and a cypress leaning over the water is often perfectly stable while an upright one with a cracked buttress is not.

Deep black clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks hard when it's dry. Post oak, blackjack oak, cedar elm, American and winged elm, sugarberry, green ash and honey mesquite. That soil movement is constantly shearing fine roots, and it's behind more mystery decline than any disease.
Buda's tree ordinance
In Buda, anything from 8 to 20 caliper inches is a "Protected Tree" and needs a removal permit from the Director of Planning. Heritage Trees are a bigger deal — those take a City Council public hearing, and the Council has to find there's genuinely no other way to develop the site. Whatever comes out gets mitigated on the same property.

Buda's older blocks around the downtown grid have mature trees on small lots, which usually means rigging rather than dropping. The newer subdivisions off FM 2001 and Overpass Road are open and easy to work. Buda is ten minutes from me either way.
