Tree removal in Buda
Buda has the strictest removal rules of anywhere I work, and most people find that out the week they want a tree gone.
In Buda, a tree of about 8 caliper inches or more is where the city gets involved. Below that you are generally clear to take it down.
About 10 minutes from me in Kyle. Whatever the answer turns out to be, it is a form and a measurement rather than a refusal — these get approved all the time. Call me and I’ll tell you where you stand.
What Buda actually regulates
A lot of Buda's older neighborhoods were built around trees that were already big, which is why the ordinance has teeth. Practically: measure before you plan anything. Caliper inches decide whether you're filling in a form or standing in front of the City Council.

Buda's Protected band runs 8 to 20 caliper inches. Above it you're into Heritage Tree territory, which takes a City Council public hearing. I haven't verified Buda's exact Heritage threshold number, so confirm it — but at this size, assume the hardest category.

The ordinance, in its own words
Trees between eight (8) and twenty (20) caliper inches are designated as Protected Trees, and any Protected Trees may be removed upon approval of a Tree Removal Permit by the Director of Planning. Heritage Trees may only be removed upon approval of a Tree Removal Permit by the City Council following a public hearing, where the City Council must find that no other alternatives for viable site development are possible. Any trees removed or damaged shall be mitigated for on the same site as the proposed development.

How a removal actually goes in Buda
Buda's older blocks around the downtown grid have mature trees on small lots, which usually means rigging rather than dropping. The newer subdivisions off FM 2001 and Overpass Road are open and easy to work. Buda is ten minutes from me either way.
Everything gets hauled away and the ground raked off behind us. Want the logs kept for firewood? Say so before we start and my crew will cut them to length and stack them rather than running them through the chipper.
The trees I get called about here
Live oak and cedar elm through the older neighborhoods, post oak on the east side toward the prairie, and bald cypress and sycamore down along Onion Creek. The creek-corridor trees are the ones people misjudge — roots there are shallower and wetter than the same species up on the flat, and a cypress leaning over the water is often perfectly stable while an upright one with a cracked buttress is not.
Before you decide to remove it
A mature live oak took fifty years to reach that size and I can take it down in a morning. Neither of us can put it back. So the first thing I want to know is whether it actually needs to go — a tree that looks finished is quite often a tree that needs the deadwood out of it and nothing more. How do I measure my tree for Buda's rules?
Put a tape around the trunk 4.5 feet above the ground to get the circumference, then divide by 3.14 for the diameter. Buda writes its rule in caliper inches. If the trunk splits into several stems below 4.5 feet, measure below the split — that usually puts you in a higher bracket than you expected.
What if the tree is dead or dangerous?
Most ordinances around here treat a dead, diseased or genuinely hazardous tree differently from a healthy one somebody would simply rather not have, and a written assessment from a Certified Arborist is usually what the city wants to see. There is one on my crew. Get the condition documented before you file anything, not after.
How much does tree removal cost in Buda?
Access is the biggest driver, ahead of size — whether there is a drop zone or whether every piece has to be roped out over a roof is the difference between a morning and a full day.
