What I see in Lockhart yards

Post oak defines this part of Caldwell County, and it's the least forgiving common tree I work on. Post oaks hate having their roots disturbed, hate irrigation aimed at them, and answer heavy pruning by dying slowly over about five years. With a post oak, less really is more, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling cuts.

The trees I get called about in Lockhart

Post oak defines this part of Caldwell County, with blackjack oak and cedar elm alongside, plus big pecans around the older houses. Post oak is the least forgiving common tree I work on: it resents root disturbance, resents irrigation aimed at it, and answers heavy pruning by declining slowly over about five years. Lockhart sits where the blackland meets the post oak savanna, and that boundary runs through town, so two properties a mile apart can have completely different problems. On the sandier side, the tree that shows up after a hard summer is post oak with hypoxylon — you'll see bark sloughing off in sheets leaving a silvery or dark powdery layer underneath. That fungus is present in healthy trees and only takes over when the tree is already drought-stressed, so it's a symptom of the last two summers rather than an infection that arrived. There's no spray for it. Once it's sheeting bark on a major stem, the wood behind it is failing and the tree is a hazard. Along Plum Creek it's a different world: pecan, cedar elm and hackberry on deeper ground.

The ground underneath: Blackland Prairie

Deep black clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks hard when it's dry. Post oak, blackjack oak, cedar elm, American and winged elm, sugarberry, green ash and honey mesquite. That soil movement is constantly shearing fine roots, and it's behind more mystery decline than any disease.

Permits in Lockhart

I haven't read Lockhart's ordinance closely enough to summarize it here, and I'm not going to guess at a rule that could cost you a mitigation bill. Call the city's planning or development services department and ask two questions: what trunk diameter triggers a permit, and is there a protected species list.

Working on a Lockhart property

Courthouse-square town with mature trees on moderate lots — normal rigging work, good access. Twenty-five minutes from Kyle. The older streets around the square have deep lots, alley access on some blocks, and mature canopy over the roofs, which makes them rigging jobs. Out on the county roads it's open pasture work where a tree can simply be felled, and that's a much shorter day.
